Alien queen Kora has a problem as vast as the endless crimson deserts. She’s the first female ruler of her territory in generations, but her people are rioting and call for her violent younger twin brother to take the throne. Despite assassination attempts, a mounting uprising of nomadic human rebels, and pressure to find a mate to help her rule, she’s determined to protect her people from her brother’s would-be tyrannical rule.

Eros is a rebel soldier hated by aliens and human alike for being a half-blood. Yet that doesn’t stop him from defending his people, at least until Kora’s soldiers raze his camp and take him captive. He’s given an ultimatum: be an enslaved bodyguard to Kora, or be executed for his true identity—a secret kept even from him.

When Kora and Eros are framed for the attempted assassination of her betrothed, they flee. Their only chance of survival is to turn themselves in to the high court, where revealing Eros’s secret could mean a swift public execution. But when they uncover a violent plot to end the human insurgency, they must find a way to work together to prevent genocide.

Take Me Away To A Great Read Q&A

Ava, I am so excited to have you stop by today. This book sounds amazing and I cannot wait to read it!

Can you tell us somethings about Beyond the Red that is not in the synopsis, without spoilers?

Here’s a fun fact: the symbols above Kora and Eros’s names at the beginning of each chapter aren’t random—they’re their names written in Sephari. Same goes for the symbols at the top of each chapter heading—they spell out the names of each month in the book, and the darkest month name marks what month that chapter takes place in!

What was the hardest scene to write and the most enjoyable?

Hardest scene was definitely near the end—there’s one there that I rewrote completely several times. Endings are hard! And the most enjoyable scene was one that involves lots of kissing. I could keep playing with that scene forever. 😀

Was any character or situation inspired by anyone you know or anything that has happened in your life?

There’s a particular thing Kora faces that is very much based off my experience, but I can’t really go into it without spoiling anything…so instead I’ll say both Kora and Eros have personality traits and pressures that come from me.

Any reason you chose to use the siblings being twins?

Yes—Kora and Dima had to be twins for the plot conflict to work, and also, logistically, Kora wouldn’t exist if she wasn’t Dima’s twin for slightly spoilery reasons I won’t get into.

What are your 5 favorite books of all time? What 5 books are you most looking forward to reading in 2016?

Gah, so hard to choose! Some of my favorites include Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amy Kaufman, The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo, The Half Bad series by Sally Green, I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, and obviously the Harry Potter series. 🙂

Some that I’m looking forward to reading (or re-reading) this year include The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi Heilig, Half Lost by Sally Green, Bad Boy by Elliot Finley Wake (writing as Leah Raeder), and If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo.

What can we expect next from you? Do you want to write in any other genres?

I’ve got a couple things up my sleeve that I’m hopeful will happen. And yes, I play around with different genres a lot, and I have a special love for fantasy, so…

Definitely introvert.

Pets! Especially furry things. ❤

I read both, but I prefer print.

Paper or Print (which do prefer to use to write on)

Handwriting is hard for me, so I type whenever possible.
Thanks for having me!
