Nic may have escaped enslavement in the mines outside of Rome, but his troubles are far from over. The Praetor War–the battle to destroy Rome from within–is in full force, and Nic is caught in the crossfire. The secretive Praetors are determined to unlock a powerful amulet–one sure to bring the empire to its knees. Worse, the Praetors believe Nic holds the key to finding this amulet, and they will stop at nothing to steal it, even if that means harming the people Nic holds most dear.

When the Praetors capture Nic’s mother, Nic knows he must do anything to save her. He challenges the Praetors to a chariot race. If he wins, they will release his mother. But if he loses, he must hand over a magic that will certainly destroy Rome and end his own life. Can Nic once again harness his magic and gather the strength to defeat his enemies? Or will he lose his mother and bear witness to Rome’s destruction?

I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of Mark of the Thief and Rise of the Wolf for an honest review.

Mark of the Thief

Mark of the Thief is a great start to a magical adventure. This is  historical, with  fantasy elements. It is perfect for middle grade and all young-adult readers. It is fun and fast paced. You get magical creatures, the griffin that Nic names Caela is so amazing.

Nic is a slave and has always worked hard to protect his sister. He would do anything for her. He could have escaped his circumstances so many times but can’t leave her behind.

Everything changes when Nic goes in a cave and finds a bulla that belonged to Julius Caesar. The amulet and then the mark that he is given on his back by the griffin gives him some kind of magic. He isn’t sure what it is or how to use it. What he learns very fast is that people will go to great lengths to take it and kill for it.

What will Nic do to protect his sister? Can Nic trust anyone? Will Nic be able to figure out what this all means before it destroys him?

Mark of the Thief was a great starting point to this series and left me wanting to know more. It was definitely out of my normal genre and I still really enjoyed it. I was really glad I read this book before the second. I am giving this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Rise of the Wolf

Rise of the Wolf is even better than the first! With all the twists and surprises at the end of the first book, this sequel was something your just itching to jump into. It already has a developed base, if you read the first book you don’t feel lost. I was so excited for this adventure to continue and see if Nic can conquer his enemies, while saving him and his sister.

Nic and his sister are now with Radulf. He knows that he is just using him, and wants him in his war for power. Nic looks at this as an opportunity to gain training and insight on how to defeat his enemies.

Nic and Livia have not seen their mother in a long-time. When Nic finds out she has been captured by his enemies he will do anything to save her. It is just who he is. If Nic loves someone he will not leave them or let them suffer. He never abandons them.

Can Nic get the bulla from Radulf? Will Nic gain enough training to stop his enemies? Who will Nic have to trust in the end to save those he loves? You have to read this awesome sequel to find out!

Rise of the Wolf is a fun, fantastic book for people of all ages! I will say that it does end on a huge cliff-hanger and now I am dying to read book 3!!! I am giving this book 4 out of 5 Stars, and I am glad I gave a series out of my normal genre a try!

Jennifer lives at the base of a very tall mountain in Northern Utah with her husband, three children, and a naughty puppy. She loves the smell of rainy days, hot chocolate, and old books, preferably all at once. She is a former speech teacher, theater director, and enjoyed a brief but disastrous career as a door-to-door pollster. In her spare time, Jennifer tends to panic, wondering what she has forgotten to do that has allowed her any spare time.
