“Enchanting and complex. Every page is filled with magic.”-Danielle Paige, New York Times best-selling author of Dorothy Must Die
Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.
Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can’t trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.
The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland…
I would like to thank the publisher and Book Expo of America for providing me with an advanced copy of LABYRINTH LOST for an honest review.
LABYRINTH LOST has culture, customs, while still being a completely unique fantasy novel. The family connections throughout the book was so moving and powerful, I thought that was really a highlight to this book. I enjoyed Alex’s relationship to her sisters as well, especially Lula. They have this very believable sister dynamic, they love each other but definitely bicker and get on each others nerves at times too. The feel of the book is so different and I loved the cultural aspects brought in (clothes, makeup, food, dancing, etc.), I think more diverse books are needed especially in fantasy. This book was needed.
Alejandra is bruja witch and is scared of her Deathday, where her family of old and present will bless her and her powers will come to their full strength. She will then be able to control them and have help. She doesn’t want this. Alex has always feared her powers and seen them as a curse. She decides to rid herself of her powers. It backfires and her family is cast into another dimension, a land called Los Lagos.
Alex only knows of one person who can help her, Nova, a brujo. She isn’t sure how much she can trust him but her options are limited. Soon they are on there way to a place neither of them have been and neither of them knows what the other is really after or capable of.
Can Alex find her family and save them from the darkness that inhabits Los Lagos? Will Novas be a problem for Alex? Will Alex finally be free of her power?
Labyrinth Lost was so full of unexpected twists and action. This book will keep the reader wanting to know more, while still being intrigued by all the different elements. The friendship between Alex and Rishi that grows throughout, was a great touch in this story. I can’t wait to see where this adventure takes us next. I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars.
