From #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike comes a truly original new novel—Breaking Bad meets Marie Antoinette in a near-future world where the residents of Versailles live like it’s the eighteenth century and an almost-queen turns to drug dealing to save her own life.

Outside the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about to become a very beautiful prison.

When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . . blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates.

Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed.

But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.

Morgan’s Review

I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with an advance copy of Glitter for an honest review.

Glitter is set in the Palace of Versailles, with modern technology! This book is completely unique, with its beautiful fashion giving nod to France in the 18th century and with the politics, danger, drugs, and romance. This book had quite the mix and seriously one of the most beautiful covers.

Danica has never been able to control her own life or future, especially after the day her mother and her witnessed the soon to be king commit a crime. Her mother has used every opportunity to seek power and position for her family. Despite what Danica wants and the pain that it is causing the rest of the family, they plan for Dani to marry the soon to be king.

Versailles is run by a company and the king is the CEO but only if they feel he has majority support and shares. He wants his marriage to be for favor and shares, to make sure to secure his rule.

Danica wants to escape and soon thinks of a plan that may help her save the money to buy her freedom. She wants to start creating cosmetics with drugs in them so she can sell them to the elite and hide it. She soon meets Saber the young man who is going to help her with her venture. He does not approve of all of her choices but soon tries to understand her.

Can you deal with something like drugs and not have consequences? Will Dani be forced to marry someone she does not love? How many will die in the quest for freedom?

This book has so many positives. I love how unique it is, that she went through so many things to endure the emotional pain, the fashion is epic. I just had a few things that kept me from loving this book. There are so many characters in this book but only a few ended up sticking with me, like Molly, Aron and Saber. I felt at times some of the traditions and things that Dani did once explained the first time were too repetitious. I know she did them repeatedly but I don’t need that much detail each time. I would have preferred that go more into the characters interactions. I did overall enjoy this book and due to the huge cliffhanger will be reading the next book. I am giving Glitter 3.5 out 5 stars.

  1. You received an advanced copy of this? Lucky girl! I love this book! Fortunately Aprilynne sent me a copy for my classroom library but I think this series is going to be great. I’m looking forward to book two. I haven’t read anything else by her yet. 😊
    Great review.

  2. I’ve had my eye on this book for ages – the cover is so beautiful, and that synopsis sounds like nothing I’ve read before! I love how it’s kind of a futuristic timeline mixed with older stuff – it sounds like such a fun book. I wish I had seen more good reviews for this, though – almost all of them I’ve come across so far are negative. Loved your review of it!
