Spill Zone: The Broken Vow
by Scott Westerfeld

(Spill Zone #2)
Publisher: First Second
Release Date: July 10, 2018

Rating: 5 Stars

All hell breaks loose in the second volume of New York Times–bestselling author Scott Westerfeld’s visionary graphic novel duology.

Three years ago an event destroyed the small city of Poughkeepsie, forever changing reality within its borders. Strange manifestations and lethal dangers now await anyone who enters the Spill Zone. Addison got close enough to the Spill Zone to touch it, literally. She survived the encounter, but came back changed.

It turns out she’s not alone. North Korea has its own Spill Zone, and a young man named Don Jae is the only one who made it out alive. Alive, but changed. Now Addison, Don Jae, and, curiously, a rag doll named Vespertine, share an unholy bond and uncanny powers.

From Scott Westerfeld, the inspired imagination behind the New York Times bestsellers Uglies and Leviathan, comes The Broken Vow, the second volume of our highly anticipated new graphic novel series.

Rating: 5 Stars

The first volume of an original graphic novel series for young adults, from New York Times–bestselling author Scott Westerfeld

Three years ago an event destroyed the small city of Poughkeepsie, forever changing reality within its borders. Uncanny manifestations and lethal dangers now await anyone who enters the Spill Zone.

The Spill claimed Addison’s parents and scarred her little sister, Lexa, who hasn’t spoken since. Addison provides for her sister by photographing the Zone’s twisted attractions on illicit midnight rides. Art collectors pay top dollar for these bizarre images, but getting close enough for the perfect shot can mean death–or worse.

When an eccentric collector makes a million-dollar offer, Addison breaks her own hard-learned rules of survival and ventures farther than she has ever dared. Within the Spill Zone, Hell awaits–and it seems to be calling Addison’s name.

Praise for Spill Zone

“Addison is particularly complex: though she is sympathetic, her decisions are intentionally presented as morally questionable. Harsh profanity and violence make this a more appropriate choice for mature readers. This unnerving, gripping title–Westerfeld’s first original graphic novel–is bound to entice older comics fans, especially those interested in darker sci-fi and nuanced characterization. . . . A must-have for teen and graphic novel collections.” —Kirkus Reviews

Fascinating and hard to forget.” —Publishers Weekly

Morgan’s Review

I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with an early copy of Spill Zone: Broken Vow for an honest review.

Spill Zone is an action packed, mystery, sci-fi/horror graphic novel for young adult readers. It is one of my favorite graphic novels I have read. I love the creep factor! This also has intrigue and you want to solve what has happened to this town and will it spread.

It starts off with this young girl who is warned by her doll that she needs to leave her home. Her older sister was supposed to be watching her but snuck out. The doll saves Lexa that night. After three years Lexa still will not speak to her sister and only speaks to her doll.

Addison worries about how to provide for her sister but also has a moral line she refuses to cross. She sneaks into the zone to take pictures and sells them to get money to survive but she has rules she tries to abide by.

When someone finds out who she is and tries to offer her bigger stakes will she take them up on it? Will she risk herself and her rules for a better future? Will Lexa’s dolls’ secrets be revealed? You have to read this amazing series to find out!

This is a fun, fast paced, graphic novel, with amazing illustrations! I am hoping there is more for this series since it was left with a satisfactory ending but also open for more. I would definitely recommend and I am giving it 5 out 5 stars.
